RECREATIONAL STREAM

RECREATIONAL DECATHLON AND FAMILY CROSS COUNTRY

Coached by Dave McLaren, and Kaleb Bennett.

Opportunity to compete at school meets and local competitions (such as Cardston Chase)

We will be working with the events in the DECATHLON – 10  events that in normal competitions cover 2 consecutive days with points given for each event, adding up to the winner having the highest number of points. This means someone good at high jump but can’t run fast could possibly earn more points than someone who can run fast. The events for the older group would be 100 meter sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meter run (first day in competition)  and 110 meters hurdles (with ten hurdles), discus, pole vault, Javelin and 1,500 meters endurance (second day). The younger group would have half as many meters to run and half as many hurdles.

In the April 1 to June 30 Track and Field program the groups are divided into “older youth” and “younger youth” ages 6 and up with no older limit. In the past the younger group was from 6 to 11 and the older group was from 12 up through high school ages. This now  gives more flexibility for those in the middle to join with either group depending on their development rather than age. For example, a 10 year old who’s been improving for 2 years could be in the older group and a  14 year old who’s new to track and field might fit better in the younger.

The younger group meets from 3:30 to 5:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the older group from 3:30 to 5:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and from 8:30 to 10:00 on Saturday mornings. This covers the three spring months, April through June.

If any of the older youth would like to volunteer or coach with the younger group on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays, they would be welcome. As soon as you turn 16 as of December 30 of the year you can ask to become an actual coach with our club.

During the summer months, July and August, we move into the FAMILY CROSS COUNTRY program. Last year we met every morning, Mondays through Saturdays from 9:00 to 11:00 but this year we will meet earlier before the sun gets too hot – 8:00 to 10:00. Everyone would be free to come and go whenever their schedule permits ( for example come at 9:00 for an hour or just two or three days a week instead of 6). The main goal would be 5km to be run (or walk/run) in September. Mondays and on Saturdays we would meet as usual under the bridge on the nature trail and practice running the trails. Tuesdays and Thursdays would be at the track where we would play running games and develop endurance skills on the track. Of course on Wednesdays we will be working the hill southeast of town. September would change back to Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:00 on the track and on Saturdays from 8:00 to 10:00 on the trail. Weather permitting we would continue Saturdays into October

Cost for both programs is 200.00. You can choose one program but the fee is the same. 50.00 goes to Athletics Alberta (Canada) for insurance and administration costs and 150.00 goes for club fees. There are two ways to get relief from these costs and all you have to do is call, or email, the Administrator at mcdave33@gmail.com or 825-594-4865. Financial support is guaranteed.
